What’s included

  • Old floor out. Existing tile, vinyl or carpet is removed and hauled away, down to a sound subfloor.
  • Subfloor prep. Tile cracks when the floor under it flexes or isn’t flat, so low spots are levelled and soft areas reinforced before any tile goes down.
  • Layout first. The pattern is planned from the centre of the room and the doorways, so you don’t end up with thin slivers of tile at the entrance.
  • Setting and grout. Tile is set in thinset, levelled, then grouted, with grout sealed where the grout type calls for it.
  • Transitions and cleanup. Thresholds to the next floor are finished, and the job is cleaned up and walked with you.

How the job runs

  1. 1Estimate. We measure, check the subfloor, talk through tile size and layout, and give you a written price.
  2. 2Demolition and prep. The old floor comes out and the subfloor is levelled or reinforced.
  3. 3Tile. Tile is laid out, set and left to cure before grouting.
  4. 4Grout and finish. Grout, sealing where needed, transitions, then cleanup.

What it costs

Tile is priced by the square foot and depends on the tile size and type, the layout pattern, and how much subfloor prep the room needs. We give you a written price after measuring.

Where it makes sense

  • Bathrooms, laundry rooms and mudrooms.
  • Front entryways that see snow, salt and boots all winter.
  • Kitchens, where you want a floor that shrugs off spills.

Where it doesn’t

  • Over a bouncy subfloor that can’t be reinforced. The tile and grout will crack.
  • Rooms where you want a warm, soft floor underfoot. Vinyl plank installation.
  • Large open areas on a tight budget, where vinyl plank or laminate costs less. Laminate installation.

Questions we get

Can new tile go over old tile?
Sometimes, if the old tile is solid, flat and the extra height works at doorways. We check at the estimate; often removing it is the better job.
Why does subfloor prep matter so much for tile?
Tile and grout can’t bend. If the floor under them flexes or dips, they crack. Getting the subfloor right is most of a good tile job.
How long does a tile floor take?
Longer than a floating floor, because thinset and grout need time to cure. You get the schedule with your estimate.
Do I need to seal the grout?
It depends on the grout. Standard cement grout should be sealed; some newer grouts don’t need it. We tell you which one you have.
