Stair Flooring Installation in Toronto

Stair flooring installation in Toronto usually means one of three jobs: replacing carpet on the stairs with hardwood or vinyl plank, covering worn stairs with new treads and risers, or refinishing hardwood stairs you already have. Pro Flooring Co has installed floors across the GTA since 2009, with 500+ installs completed, and we're WSIB-covered and insured on every job.

What’s included

  • Old covering out. Carpet, pad, tack strips and staples come off, and the stairs are cleaned up for the new surface.
  • A check of every step. We look for squeaks, loose treads and uneven steps and fix what can be fixed from above before anything new goes on.
  • New treads and risers. Hardwood treads, or vinyl plank with the stair nosing made for that product, cut to each step because older stairs are rarely all the same size.
  • A match to your floors. Species, colour or vinyl product chosen to match the floor at the top and bottom of the stairs.
  • Finish and cleanup. Stain and finish on hardwood, then a full cleanup and walkthrough.

How the job runs

  1. 1Estimate. We count and measure the steps, look at what is under the carpet, and talk through matching your floors.
  2. 2Removal. The old covering comes off and the stairs are prepped.
  3. 3Install. Treads, risers and nosing go on step by step, each one fitted to its opening.
  4. 4Finish. Hardwood is stained and finished; vinyl plank stairs are ready once installed.

Stair refinishing

If your stairs are already hardwood and only the finish is worn, refinishing costs less than new treads. The treads are sanded to bare wood, stained if you want a new colour, and given a new finish, often at the same time as the floors around them.

Refinishing works when the treads are solid and not badly split or worn through at the nosing. If they are, new treads are the better fix, and we tell you which one your stairs need at the estimate.

What it costs

Stair work is usually priced per step, and depends on the material, whether risers are included, the nosing and any repairs. We give you a written price after measuring.

Where it makes sense

  • Carpeted stairs between floors that are getting hardwood or vinyl plank.
  • Worn or mismatched treads you want to match a new floor.
  • Hardwood stairs where only the finish has worn.

Where it doesn’t

  • Stairs with structural problems such as cracked stringers. That needs a carpenter first.
  • Laminate on stairs. Its edges wear and chip on stair nosings; vinyl plank or hardwood holds up better. Vinyl plank installation.

Questions we get

Can you match my stairs to my new floor?
Yes. We choose the stair product and colour with the floor at the top and bottom of the stairs, so they read as one job.
Can vinyl plank go on stairs?
Yes, using the stair nosing made for that vinyl product. It is a good option where the floors around the stairs are vinyl plank too.
How long does a staircase take?
It depends on the number of steps, the material and whether the stairs need repairs. You get the schedule with your estimate.
Is my staircase usable during the job?
Usually with care, but not while finish is drying on hardwood treads. We plan around how you get between floors.
