Laminate delivers a convincing hardwood look at a price point that works for most GTA homeowners. When installed with quality product and proper underlayment, it performs beautifully in bedrooms, living rooms, and main floor renovations for 15–25 years.
A complete installation — not just dropping planks on the floor.
We only install AC3-minimum product for residential applications — nothing below that. If your household gets heavy traffic, we'll recommend AC4. The AC rating measures scratch, impact, and stain resistance, and it's the single biggest factor in how long your floor looks good.
Every laminate installation includes appropriate underlayment — foam for basic applications, combination moisture-foam barriers for areas with concrete below. Underlayment prevents hollow sounds, cushions the floor, and handles minor surface imperfections.
Laminate needs a flat surface — typically no more than 3mm variation over 1.8m. We check, fill, and sand as required before any boards go down. A level subfloor prevents joints from separating and clicking over time.
Laminate is installed as a floating floor using a click-lock system. Boards are never glued or nailed — they click together and float over the subfloor. Expansion gaps are maintained at all walls and fixed objects.
Quarter-round, T-molding, reducers, and stair nose (where applicable) are all included in your quoted price. These details are what separates a professional installation from a DIY job.
We remove all packaging, sawdust, and debris before we leave. You walk through with us to confirm the installation — we address any issues on the spot.
We measure the rooms, assess the subfloor, and help you choose the right product for your budget and traffic level. You'll receive a firm written price that includes product, labour, underlayment, and all trim pieces. Laminate doesn't require acclimation the way hardwood does, so we can often book your install within a week of your estimate.
We bring the laminate to your home and store it in the installation rooms briefly. While it doesn't need long acclimation, letting it settle at room temperature for a few hours reduces any dimensional changes mid-install. Subfloor preparation is completed before the first plank: levelness checked and corrected, existing floor assessed (removal or overlay determined), and moisture readings taken. If old flooring needs to come out first, our flooring removal service handles it cleanly and completely.
We start from the longest, most visible wall and work across the room with staggered joints for a natural appearance. Every row is checked for alignment before the next row begins. Around obstacles — doorframes, cabinetry bases, HVAC vents — we cut precisely and undercut door casings for a clean, professional look. Expansion gaps are maintained at all perimeter edges. For most GTA homes, a complete floor is installed in a single day.
All trim and transitions installed, complete cleanup, and a room-by-room walkthrough with you. We check every transition strip, confirm the perimeter trim is properly seated, and make sure no boards are clicking or hollow-sounding. If you notice anything that doesn't look right, it gets fixed before we leave — not scheduled for a callback.
Laminate is the best-value flooring choice for GTA homeowners who want the look of hardwood in a dry-area application without the hardwood price tag. Here's when it makes sense — and when it doesn't.
Great for: Main floor living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and home offices. These are the rooms where laminate performs best — light to moderate foot traffic, no regular moisture exposure, and the warmth and visual appeal of wood is most appreciated.
Be cautious with: Kitchens require care — laminate near the sink or dishwasher is risky if spills aren't cleaned immediately. Keep it away from high-splash zones and use appliance mats. Powder rooms and bathrooms are better served by waterproof LVP.
Not recommended for: Below-grade basements without exceptional moisture control, full bathrooms, or any space with chronic moisture. The HDF wood-fibre core in laminate will swell and delaminate with sustained water exposure — this is not a warranty issue, it's just the nature of the product.
Modern laminate technology: Today's laminate products look dramatically better than what you might remember from 10 years ago. Deep-embossed textures, realistic grain patterns, and wider plank formats have made quality laminate genuinely convincing. Bring in photos of the look you want — we'll source product that matches it.
When to choose LVP instead: If any room might see moisture — or if you have pets that have accidents, young children, or you just want genuine peace of mind — luxury vinyl plank is worth the modest additional cost. For whole-home renovations across the GTA, we often suggest laminate in bedrooms and LVP everywhere else.

Laminate — Living Room, Toronto

Wide Plank — Living Room, Toronto
Laminate typically costs $2–$4 per square foot installed, compared to $5–$9 for solid hardwood and $4–$8 for engineered hardwood. For GTA homeowners working within a budget, laminate delivers the visual appeal of wood at roughly half the installed cost. The tradeoff is that laminate cannot be refinished — when it's worn, it needs to be replaced. Quality laminate (AC4 rated) should last 15–25 years with normal residential use.
Durability varies significantly by AC rating. We recommend a minimum AC3 for residential use, which handles normal household traffic, light furniture movement, and everyday spills. For busy households, AC4 (commercial-grade) is worth the modest upgrade in cost. Avoid AC1-AC2 products sold at big box stores — they're designed for very light use and won't hold up in a typical GTA home with kids, pets, or regular foot traffic.
This is an important question and deserves a direct answer: laminate is water-resistant, not waterproof. Small spills cleaned up promptly are fine. Sustained moisture — a flooding dishwasher, standing water, high humidity — will cause the HDF core to swell and warp. For kitchens, we recommend limiting laminate to areas away from the sink and dishwasher, and always using appliance mats. For bathrooms, basements, or any area with regular moisture exposure, luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is a better choice.
Quality laminate (AC3/AC4 with a proper underlayment) typically lasts 15–25 years in residential settings. The main factors that shorten its lifespan are moisture exposure, inadequate underlayment, and buying cheap AC1/AC2 product. With good installation and reasonable care — area rugs at entrances, felt pads on furniture, and prompt spill cleanup — laminate holds up very well for its price point.
In many cases, yes. Laminate can float over existing hardwood, vinyl sheet, or thin tile as long as the existing floor is level, firm, and within height tolerances. Installing over multiple layers of old flooring is generally not recommended, and loose or damaged floors should be removed first. During your estimate, we assess what's currently there and give you a straightforward recommendation.
Our quotes always include underlayment. For laminate, we use a foam or combination foam-moisture barrier underlayment appropriate for the application. Good underlayment serves multiple purposes: it absorbs the hollow clicking sound that can occur with floating floors, provides a slight thermal buffer, and addresses minor subfloor imperfections. Don't skimp on underlayment — it makes a significant difference in both sound and feel.
